Breastfeeding in Emergencies

Breastfeeding in Emergencies was the theme of 2009's BF awareness week.
An article here begins with the facts, the Carnival post for August 2009 puts the myths straight... or you could take up what La Leche League has to say.

The Earthquake in China in 2008 showed how useful wet-nursing can be.  Watch this CNN piece about China's Mother #1.

More recently, the tragic circumstances in Haiti have spurred requests for donations of expressed breastmilk. Sensible donation of a vital resource, or an unfeasible waste of effort & goodwill?

Other ways you may wish to help Haiti:
  • Donate to DEF (Oxfam).
  • Buy from Haitian craftspeople now and look out for fairtrade Haitian goods in the future
  • Or buy from other shops which are donating profits (e.g. Etsy) to Haiti.
  • Easiest of all:   Join the call to cancel Haiti's debt.

A photo shared on our Facebook group (thanks Becki) shows us how topsy-turvy the world's priorities are. (So this image gets the pixelation treatment!!)

News in Feb 2010 on the breastfeeding angle of the tragic situation in Haiti is summarised here, where we can learn more about the Breatfeeding tents, and the work of those who are dispelling myths and encouraging mothers.
Familiar, and yet SO unfamiliar.  As Angela says, have a hanky ready.

And further news in November 2010 as Cholera is a huge threat... Breastfeeding is saving lives again.
