Advert for breastfeeding

I called this post "Advert for Breastfeeding" because that was a lovely phrase my lovely Health Visitor used to describe my first baby when she was a huge chubby milky lump! :-)

Here are some adverts from the past and present. It's my little hobby collection - would love to have any you can recommend, too?! I like ads that show breastfeeding of older children as well as babies. Also ads that show how easy it is for Mums to breastfeed out of their homes - let's show the world that it is the normal way to feed children.

Contrasting Images of Breastfeeding

Vanessa Beecroft has certainly attracted some interest with her latest actions in the Sudan!
Go to links here, here, and here.

I hadn't heard of her till I saw her in the TV show 'Other People's Breastmilk'.

Celebrity Breastfeeding Mums

Of course, we don't need any celebrity gossip to know that breastfeeding our children is a really good start. But role models are often helpful when we are starting a new lifestyle...

Contrasting Images of Breastfeeding TWO

Here are some more images which contrast. Just a bit.
Thanks to Abi for the inspiration here.
  • First of all, my favourite lesson in positioning of the baby... (apart from the more personal image of my own child doing this!!)

  • Next, a rather unnecessary doll named Bebe Gloton (sold in Spain) - advertised positively here, and then the uproar caused by it was covered here in the Daily Mail or on Fox News. Apparently selling very well in the US.  Oversexualised for young girls? Well, how about Bratz dolls?

  • Next, a poster in a hospital labour ward which caused a huge fuss in May 2009, but seems to be an excellent attempt to normalise & promote Breastfeeding. Article from Telegraph here.

  • Finally, a different kind of doll (perhaps this is the middle way?):
These images all have one thing in common. They are attempting to support breastfeeding by showing that Breastfeeding is the normal way to feed children.

Breastfeeding Humour

Glad to have any other suggestions for this list!

A collection here from the Motherwear blog pages, I particularly enjoy the Baby Blues cartoons (thup, thup, thup!);

but you may prefer the Knight Life, which sees breastfeeding from the father's viewpoint.

Toddler with fancy straw: "When it's my turn, can I use this?"

Also a link to the Family Guy clip - where the 'baby' Stewie tries to kick the habit!

Many different clips are collected together on this page on www.Breastfeeding.com

And while you're watching videoclips, why not view this Sesame St film which reminds us that we are all Mammals.

To Books now:
A musician and former Lactation Consultant, Alison Blenkinsop, is the author of "Fit to Bust", which is a great book to dip into, a lovely mixture of tips & advice on Breastfeeding - often set to music, to help it sink in & stay in!! Best of all, profits raised from the book go to Baby Milk Action.
Alison's website is here; including a page about her book, a sample chapter, and also Resources for Lactation advice (love the LATCH KEY).

Kate Evans' book is a marvellous resource, and a great giggle.  Here's a comic page from her blog:

Satire here - from One of Those Mothers.
Also a satire on those "she should be weaned now" comments... from the Leaky B@@b.
And another here on YouTube from Hathor the Cow Goddess, 6 minutes long. Avoid this one if Dr Seuss annoys you.  And as always with YouTube links - censor the comments for yourself!

Finally a marvellous Hathor comic strip comment about "covering up".
