Cloth Bums

If you are wavering on the issue of changing over to cloth nappies - you'll be interested in a new local Council Incentive Scheme.

Why would the council pay for this?
Each nappy used and thrown away has to be collected and disposed of by the council - so if more Flintshire babies' bums are covered with reusable nappies (even part-time), Flintshire Refuse Collection will be cheaper. Hooray from all of us!

Here is the link to Flintshire County Council's info page about real nappies. You can claim an incentive of up to £75 to give it a try with a range of companies, including local advice agents and a laundry service.  Do call the number if you have any questions, they are very helpful.

To qualify - your child must be under 18 months old, and you must live in Flintshire or Denbighshire.
It's worth noting that the 3 x £25 vouchers can be spent all in on go, or with a few different companies over time - so it is flexible.
The leaflet & application form is available in this Pdf. file.  Nothing too tricky, unlike a Child Tax Credit form.

Do ask around about cloth nappies - many people have tried them & you'll get lots of ideas & enthusiasm for cloth, the more people you talk to!  You may even find some second-hand, that way.

Top tips for nappy rash - it happens to the best of us, particularly when teething...
  • If you are using cloth nappies and they aren't rinsed well enough, that can irritate enough to cause nappy rash. Many parents find their children suffer much worse with throwaway nappies.
  • Sufferers will thank you for some air-time!  A coating of breastmilk (BM) can also do wonders.  Clean up the nappy area, then a quick squirt of BM (or apply it tidily with cotton wool from a bowl of expressed BM if you prefer) - allow the milk to dry on the skin and allow for some air time before redressing. Take the plunge and go for it, you'll be amazed how well it clears up.
