Dispel-a-Myth Monday: "Breastfeeding takes longer than bottle-feeding"

At a recent meeting of Breastfeeding Supporters in Rhyl, attendees were asked to write (on a Post-It note) a Myth about Breastfeeding which they had heard in their local community.
We had a great response & were able to display them all on a Wall of Myths.
Well, actually - a Door of Myths.

I promised I would make use of them all, and so here they are!
Roughly each week on a Monday, I'll post up a new Dispel-a-Myth-Monday subject - and I hope that you'll help me by battering it down.
Please share widely, as this may help each myth to die (peacefully in it's sleep, surrounded by relatives)

An Amazon, from Greek Mythology

SO - this week's MYTH is:

"Breastfeeding takes longer than bottle-feeding"

Please add a comment below to tell us why this statement is not true.  It's a Myth!
Post a comment on Facebook and I'll add them on here for you.

Here's a link to the first Dispel-a-Myth Monday post.

from my experience breast feeding is quicker and easier than bottle feeding. With bottle feeding you have to scrub the bottles, sterilize them, boil water, make up feed, wait for them to cool or warm again (while baby screams in hunger). Then once your baby actually gets his/her milk you have to stop every couple of minutes to wind him/her. Both my bottle fed nieces would take an hour or more to finish a 4oz bottle of milk.
With breast feeding all you need to is whip out a boob and the jobs a good un. Neither of my breastfed children ever needed winding. They would feed for half an hour or so and be satisfied. Yes they might have fed more frequently when they were tiny, but compared to the other work involved in bottle feeding this was nothing

I'm unsure how anyone can think this is possibly true!! It's so much quicker to pull up a top and undo a bra than it is to go through all the faff of making up a bottle of formula. And anyway, even if it did take longer, it's a good excuse to sit down, put your feet up and have a cuppa/read a book/catch up on your favourite tv program/post on a breastfeeding website!!

Nicole: Like heck! My DS has been 1/2 BF and 1/2 FF for the last 3 months or so due to food sensitivities, and giving a bottle takes a LOT longer that breastfeeding!
He can drain both sides in 10 minutes flat... takes 20 minutes to finish a bottle!

Emily: My daughter when first born used to feed for about 5-10 mins at a time. And with no bottle to sterilise or prepare and heat I'd say that is quite a lot quicker than bottle feeding!

Julie: I think it depends on the baby!

Erin: There is no prep when breastfeeding! Hello it's clear as can be what is faster! No question

Heather: ‎:-O my husband had a very rude response to this one!! :-O

DBM: That is true Erin however some babies are more efficient than others. My daughter used take an hour to feed, less with a bottle of ebm and my boys were always done in under 10 mins! J

Sam: Erm... even if someone's trying to argue that a baby drains a bottle faster than a boob, they shouldn't forget to add on prep time. Bottle takes the time to boil the kettle and cool it to the right temp, mix and cool the feed to the right temp, not forgetting having to sterilise the bottles in the first place... breastfeeding prep = instantaneous, no washing, sterilising, mixing or faffing about trying to get it to the right temperature. Who keeps peddling such a ridiculous myth?!!

Erin: Like Sam said- bottles are more work period- prep cleaning etc! I had to pump and bottle feed for six weeks- what a pain! Plus did u know that babies drain bottles faster because it's dripping down their throat:( they don't have a choice or control over what they are eating!

Carrie: OMG, the thought of having to prepare a bottle as opposed to lift up my shirt in the middle of the night? No thanks. BF my not be "easy" at times, but it is surely convenient!

Erin: If someone held a cup of water to your mouth and tipped it upside down without breaks u would swallow fast too:(

Apple: They get sick faster too! Take as long as u like lil bf baby

Carolyn: all three of my pickles have had feeds as short as 5min to 2hrs, I put the best interest of my children first, not what was quickest for me, who would pass up a reason for cuddles : )

Jayne: breast feeding is an instant food, you dont have to say, I know your hungry baby, but you need to wait 15 mins while I make up your bottle! And so what if they take their time over their meal, so do I when its a good meal!

I agree that every baby is different--some children are efficient feeders from the breast, while others take for ever (like a friend of mine, whose son is latched to the boob about 24/7 at 3 months!) My son, on the other hand, got expressed BM from a bottle, and could drain those suckers in about 15 minutes, without stopping to burp (wind?) him. And because we were not using formula, all we had to do was send the bottles through the dishwasher for sterilization--no boiling of the milk required, no warming of the milk required, either!
